This Saturday in Abu Dhabi, after the fights, fans were eagerly awaiting UFC 294, where Islam Makhachev was scheduled to face Charles Oliveira. However, due to Oliveira’s injury, Makhachev will now face Alexander Volkanovski. Nevertheless, Volkanovski wasn’t the only fighter contacted. Former rival of Khabib Nurmagomedov, Dustin Poirier, revealed he was contacted, but the fight didn’t materialize.
Ex-Khabib Nurmagomedov Rival’s Anticipated UFC 294 Bout with Islam Makhachev Hits Roadblock
UFC featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski is eyeing to avenge his recent UFC loss at UFC 294. Given, Charles Oliveira’s injury forced him out of the main event, and Volkanovski has bravely stepped up to face the UFC lightweight champion just 11 days ahead of the fight.
On the platform x (formerly Twitter), Poirier was questioned about why he didn’t step up to fight Makhachev. He mentioned being approached for the fight after Oliveira pulled out, and even though he agreed, the fight didn’t come together.
Poirier faced Nurmagomedov’s head coach in 2019 at UFC 242, where he suffered a submission defeat. Now, Makhachev, supported by Nurmagomedov, is poised to fight Volkanovski for the second time.
Given Poirier’s recent devastating loss to Gaethje, a chance to fight a former foe of Khabib would’ve made an intriguing matchup. However, in terms of matching the hype of Oliveira vs. Makhachev, his fight against Volkanovski seems to be the best fit.
