Review of the premiere episode of TUF 31: Team McGregor vs Team Chandler
Within the first few minutes of the episode, McGregor and Chandler come face to face in an intense confrontation. Chandler predicts knocking out McGregor in the second round if they were to fight. McGregor dismissively claims he would “pin” Chandler and warns him to “be careful what you wish for.” The tension between the two coaches was palpable and it offers a compelling storyline to follow this season.
After the coaches’ met, the team selection process begins. The fighters are divided into 4 groups: lightweight veterans, lightweight prospects, bantamweight veterans and bantamweight prospects. McGregor wins the coin toss and chooses the lightweight prospects, while Chandler takes the lightweight veterans. McGregor then selects the bantamweight prospects, leaving Chandler with the bantamweight veterans.
The teams provide an interesting mix of highly experienced fighters and young, up-and-coming talents. On McGregor’s side, Mando Gutierrez and Lee Hammond stand out as particularly promising prospects. For Chandler, seasoned veterans like Kurt Holobaugh, Austin Hubbard and Timur Valiev will provide leadership for their team.
Once the teams move into the house, their first training sessions begin. In contrasting styles, McGregor puts his team through intense sparring right away, while Chandler starts lighter with basic drills. The coaches then rank their respective teams to determine the first matchups.
First Fight
In the first fight, Team McGregor’s Nate Jennerman faces Team Chandler’s Roosevelt Roberts at lightweight. Roberts pulls off an incredible eight-second knockout, the fastest in TUF history, to give Team Chandler the first win. While Chandler’s team celebrates, Jennerman receives words of encouragement from a disappointed McGregor and team.
The season premiere sets the table for a thrilling season. With the initial matchups set and the competition underway, Episode 1 highlights the passion and intensity that McGregor and Chandler will bring as opposing coaches. Roberts’ lightning-quick finish demonstrates the high level of talent in the TUF gym. Overall, The Ultimate Fighter: McGregor vs. Chandler is off to an exceptional start and gearing up to be one of the best seasons yet. The fireworks have only just begun.
