Masvidal won the first “BMF” belt in 2019 at UFC 244, defeating Nate Diaz through a doctor’s stoppage TKO in the third round. Nearly four years later, the UFC made the decision to bring the title back, and “Gamebred” believes the organisation made the right choice in choosing the fighters who would be vying for it. As he said, “ I think they picked the right two candidates to do that.”

In the main event of UFC 291 later this month, Poirier and Gaethje compete for the BMF belt. The championship, though largely ceremonial, was given up by Jorge Masvidal when “Gamebred” ended his MMA career after falling to Gilbert Burns at UFC 287. The UFC chose to reintroduce the belt for this next fight in light of Masvidal’s retirement, and Masvidal is personally delighted with that choice.

Nate Diaz came up with the BMF idea in 2019 when he declared he wanted to face Masvidal next to defend his fictitious title after defeating Anthony Pettis at UFC 241. When the UFC adopted the concept, it became the first title the promotion had since the former Superfight championship in the late 1990s that wasn’t associated with a particular weight class or competition. Masvidal defeated Diaz in the next match at UFC 244, earning the first-ever and sole BMF champion in company history.
