Canelo Alvarez failed drug test: Which substance did Canelo Alvarez take?

The incident happened back in 2018 when Canelo Alvarez geared up to face Gennady Golovkin in the rematch. Months before the fight, Alvarez tested positive for a prescription-only drug, Clenbuterol. Clenbuterol is primarily for asthma. However, it also helps to build lean muscle and reduce fat. And the Mexican tested positive for this on two separate occasions.

Ultimately, Canelo Alvarez faced a 6-month suspension from boxing activities. However, the story behind the failed drug test got more interesting when Canelo and his team gave their explanation for Clenbuterol found in his system.

Apparently, meat vendors in Mexico give Clenbuterol to their cattle to improve the quality of the meat. And Alvarez claimed that since he ate a lot of meat in preparation for the Golovkin rematch, they found traces of the banned substance. The Mexican fighter maintained his innocence and claimed he did take it intentionally.

This explanation was enough to avoid a lengthy ban and since it happened before a fight, Alvarez escaped a fine. Moreover, the Mexican has not had any more issues since then. So there is a chance that he was right about the meat vendors. However, when you look at the Mexican’s physique, it is clear that he will always have his doubters.

What do you think about Canelo Alvarez’s failed drug test? Do you think it was intentional or was it a mistake?
