The reigning UFC welterweight champion, Leon Edwards, is poised to enter the octagon at UFC 295 when the promotion makes its return to Madison Square Garden. As confirmed by UFC President Dana White, Edwards is set to make his presence felt “before the year’s end” and there’s a chance we might see him in action at MSG. Initially, it was reported that Leon Edwards would face Colby Covington at UFC 295. However, according to Edwards’ manager, this matchup is now expected to move from UFC 295 to UFC 296.
Leon Edwards vs Colby Covington Fight Possibly Rescheduled to UFC 296, from Jones vs Miocic at UFC 295
The UFC is returning to Madison Square Garden (MSG) for the first time in three decades, with its previous event there dating back to 1993. While the complete fight card remains undisclosed, preliminary reports hinted at Edwards’ return to face Covington alongside the confirmed Jones vs. Miocic main event.
However, there’s now a possibility of this bout shifting from UFC 295 to UFC 296, as per Edwards’ manager. Tim Simpson, the manager of Leon Edwards, has just spilled the beans that a showdown between Edwards and Covington is nearly a done deal.
According to Simpson, these two fighters are gearing up to go head-to-head, with the fight slated for either November or December. This could mean that the fight, initially rumored to be part of the UFC 295 card headlined by Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic, might make its way to UFC 296 instead.
After his loss to Kamaru Usman, whom he had previously defeated to become the champion at UFC 286 in March, “Rocky” has been absent from competition. Following the bout, Dana White revealed that Colby Covington, who served as the backup fighter for UFC 286, is the next contender for Edwards’ welterweight title whenever he decides to defend it. Which will be in Nov or Dec.
