Khabib Nurmagomedov Recalls His Late Father

Khabib’s father and longtime coach Abdulmanap passed away in July 2020 due to complications from COVID-19 and a stroke. Abdulmanap was incredibly influential in Khabib’s MMA career and life. He had trained Khabib in combat sambo from a young age and was there every step of the way during Khabib’s rise to UFC stardom. Khabib’s dominance and success inside the Octagon were a direct result of Abdulmanap’s guidance, support, and training.

Losing his father last year devastated Nurmagomedov. In his first fight following his father’s passing, a submission win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254, Khabib was seen weeping after the bout as he processed the range of emotions. Meanwhile, giving a tribute to him in the month of Ramadan he shared a picture which shows Abdulmanap with a quote in Arabic which translates, “We belong to Allah and to him we shall return.”

Though Khabib announced his retirement from MMA after that fight to honor a promise to his mother, his father’s memory lives on and continues to motivate him. Despite Abdulmanap’s passing, Khabib has continued to share old photos and stories of their time together over the years on social media. Each post highlights the eternal and loving bond between a son and his father.

Khabib’s recent Instagram tribute reminds us of Abdulmanap’s devotion, not just as a coach raising a champion but as a father who instilled in Khabib the values of hard work, faith, and perseverance that made him a legend. Though Abdulmanap left too soon, Khabib ensures his enduring memory and spirit live on forever. The love and lessons passed from father to son will continue guiding Khabib, even in moments of enormous grief, to greater heights.
