The morning was dreadful for fight fans in Abu Dhabi as Dana White revealed that the anticipated ‘Fight of the Year’ between Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira had been called off just 11 days before UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi. Meanwhile, the Brazilian pulled out, and former rival of Islam, Alexander Volkanovski, stepped in to save the day. Commenting on these recent developments, Khabib Nurmagomedov said, “doesn’t matter” who Makhachev faces and claims the champion is ready for every challenge.
Khabib Nurmagomedov Calm Despite Oliveira Withdrawn, Says Makhachev Every Opponent
Dana White confirmed Oliveira’s withdrawal and announced Volkanovski as the replacement for UFC 294’s main event against Islam Makhachev. Oliveira was set to fly to Abu Dhabi today but had to miss out due to a severe eyebrow laceration sustained during yesterday’s fifth-round sparring.
And now Head Coach of Makhachev, Nurmagomedov has commented on the news. He stated, “So this is a situation brother. Islam is a world champion right now if somebody can make 155 (lbs) and the UFC says this guy is a contender who cares. If King Kong can make 155 okay, bring this guy here. Doesn’t matter.”
He also added, “I told Islam early in the morning that it doesn’t matter brother, you are the champion. Volk, Charles, Poirier, or Dustin like it doesn’t matter brother. If it is supposed to be Charles, okay he pulls out but we already beat him. And if they want Volk again, the first fight was a good and competitive fight. But we won.”
