At UFC 291, Justin Gaethje demonstrated that he is Jorge Masvidal’s replacement as the holder of the “BMF” title with a mind-blowing head-kick knockout. The main event of UFC 291 was an exciting lightweight contest between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje that lasted five rounds.
The two combatants had previously squared off in April 2018, making this fight a rematch. That evening, Poirier’s hand had been elevated thanks to a fourth-round TKO.
Both sportsmen engaged in a dramatic striking duel in the opening round, exchanging several hard strikes. But in the second round, “The Highlight” showed true to his moniker by hitting Poirier with a vicious head kick that instantly knocked “The Diamond” out. The highlight of the celebration was ‘The Highlight’s’ backflip off the top of the octagon as the battle came to a close.

Gaethje’s head kick knockout at UFC 291 resembled strangely Leon Edwards’ head kick knockout of Kamaru Usman at UFC 278 from almost exactly a year prior. The fact that both events were held at Utah’s Delta Centre is another intriguing fact to consider.
Gaethje asked for the winner of lightweight champion Islam Makhachev’s rematch with former champion Charles Oliveira after the victory. Oliveira had previously submitted Gaethje in Round 1 of their title fight in 2022.
