Jon Jones on Shoe deals: UFC 285 star Jon Jones names Israel Adesanya and Conor McGregor: UFC News: Before making his eagerly anticipated comeback, Jon Jones bought some sneakers in New York City. The renowned former light heavyweight champion discussed which UFC 285 fighters he thought should serve as brand ambassadors for footwear companies as he chose shoes that would look nice on him.

‘Bones’ was asked to name two additional fighters who he believed deserved their own footwear deals during a recent interview with Complex. Jones listed Conor McGregor and Israel Adesanya as his two picks, considering their fame and cutting-edge design sense.

In the interview Bones said “If I had to recommend, I don’t like this fighter very much, but I can’t deny Israel Adesanya… He’s a statement-maker… And then there’s Conor McGregor. He makes us all look good… Those are the two guys that seem like they got it going on when it comes to fashion and style.”

Jon Jones is well-versed in the sole-thread industry. The multinational sportswear giant Nike previously worked with the sneakerhead, signing him to a global sponsorship agreement in 2012. Despite the short lifespan of the agreement, which ended two years later, Jones was given his own line of trademark sneakers by Nike, which were incredibly popular.

The Nike Free Trainer 5.0 Jon “Bones” Jones version was introduced in 2013 and quickly became the brand’s first-ever signature shoe for a mixed martial artist in the US.

Jones is the youngest UFC champion in history, thus Nike’s choice to sign him paid off as the limited-edition shoes sold out in under two minutes. The 35-year-old American’s signature Nike T-shirt was also made available at the same time as his shoe, and it too sold out on the first day of sales.

It’s still a remarkable achievement for an MMA fighter and first-time Nike athlete to have a sell-out in that timeline even though the total sales data of the shoes and clothing created were not made public.

As a result of his altercation with longtime opponent Daniel Cormier at the UFC 178 pre-fight press conference, Nike’s partnership with Jon Jones abruptly ended in 2014.
