The story behind Jon Jones Nickname – “BONES”

According to Jon Jones, everyone used to refer to the former lightweight champion as “Bones” when he played high school football. The moniker was a tribute to Jones’ slight build; the former champion said that, despite being 193 cm tall at the time, he only weighed 170 lbs.

Jones competed in the light heavyweight division for the majority of his UFC career before switching to the heavyweight division recently. The fighter, though, wasn’t notably bulky back then. Jones claims that his coaches and teammates at Endicott High School used to refer to him as “bony” because of his slender build.

In an interview at UFC 165, Jones stated, “I was like 6 feet 4 [inches], which is the same height as I am today, but I was like 170 [lbs], now I’m 230. So, I was on the football squad and much skinnier. In my football stance, I just had these slender legs and looked “bony.”

Jones played defensive line at Union-Endicott High School and carried the moniker into MMA as a nod to his football days there. 84.5 inches. The light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones can reach that distance. The reach is one of the longest in the whole UFC. The moniker “Bones” may not be the most thrilling for a boxer, but no other would do, given his eerily long limbs.

Jones will compete in his first heavyweight match. After a three-year layoff, he will come back to challenge Ciryl Gane for the title that Francis Ngannou vacated after he couldn’t reach a new contract with the UFC.

With how he dominated the light heavyweight class, a switch to heavyweight looked inevitable. Jones left the sport after winning his final contest, a light heavyweight title defense on February 8, 2020, in the main event of UFC 247 in Houston against Dominick Reyes.

The 35-year-old Jon Jones is now poised to compete for another title, which, if he succeeds, could be the most significant fight of his career.
