Dagestan has been a stop on the way to the UFC lightweight championship for a while now. And now the path to the top spot in the pound-for-pound rankings also begins.

Like his old comrade and friend Khabib Nurmagomedov, the retired former UFC lightweight champion, Makhachev will now be regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. At his retirement, Khabib Nurmagomedov was ranked first in the UFC men’s pound-for-pound rankings. He remained there until his title vacation in March 2021, when he was deposed.

Volkanovski, the UFC featherweight champion, entered the battle ranked No. 1 pound-for-pound in the entire world by ESPN. He was competing in his nation. He was moving up against Makhachev, who entered as the No. 2 contender. Regardless of weight category, the two best combats in the world engaged in a fight for the first time in MMA history.
