Francis Ngannou on UFC release: “Free at last”

For the past two years, Francis Ngannou and UFC have been at odds over contractual issues. It was highly appropriate that Francis Ngannou, who fought to be “free” from the UFC’s stringent contract, was let go from the company on Martin Luther King Day after fruitless discussions.

Ngannou posted a video of Martin Luther King Jr. on Instagram after the UFC release. “Free at last, Free at last, Thank God almighty we are free at last,” MLK exclaims in the footage. Ngannou has fought to be released from his UFC contract.

According to Dana White, UFC offered more money than any other heavyweight boxer in the promotion’s history to the heavyweight champion, yet he still chose to turn it down. Instead of the salary, Ngannou has been more concerned with the limitations of the UFC contract. In his Instagram caption, the knockout king only said, “Happy MLK Day y’all.”

The heavyweight fighter had already alleged that accepting the UFC deal made him feel he was being held hostage. Ngannou is now free to join any company and engage in combat wherever he pleases. Combat Sports Fans will continue to follow Ngannou’s career wherever he fights.

Does Fury vs Ngannou come next?

In the past, Ngannou has hinted at a willingness to box, most notably by discussing a prospective matchup with heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. Ngannou and Fury frequently discussed the prospect of a crossover fight during Ngannou’s dispute with the UFC. After defeating Dillian Whyte by knockout in April 2022, Fury even went so far as to confront Ngannou in the ring.

It would seem absurd to picture Fury vs Ngannou in a boxing match. Ngannou, though, has stated that he wants to try boxing before retiring and make a lot of money, and no alternative would offer a higher payday than a bout with Fury. Ngannou has already spoken up about the notion since he believes it will allow him to put himself to the test and earn money that could change his life.
