Ex-UFC Fighter, Brock Lesnar’s Rival Retires from Sports, Shifts Focus to Politics

Alistair Overeem won't fight professionally again, nor will he look as bulked up as normal. That's because the former UFC fighter retired from combat sports after making some significant lifestyle modifications.

Numerous MMA news outlets have written about the retirement early this year of ex- UFC fighter Alister Overeem, who was once Brock Lesnar’s rival. Later on, though, it was referred to as nothing more than speculative. The management team for Alister Overeem confirmed that the remarks he made in the ‘Lovin’ Dubai’ interview on June 2 had been misinterpreted.

Today Brock Lesner’s rival Alistair Overeem made an official statement about retiring from his fighting career via an Instagram post. The ex-UFC fighter also stated that though he doesn’t plan to enter the fighting ring anymore, he is determined to fight in Dutch politics, thereby indicating the shift in the fighter’s career, he is willing to undertake going forward.

Alister Overeem once rival to Brock Lesnar retires from combat sports

According to reports, Alistair Overeem won’t fight professionally again, nor will he look as bulked up as normal. That’s because the former UFC fighter retired from combat sports after making some significant lifestyle modifications.

A combat sports career deserving of the Hall of Fame has come to an end after almost 25 years. In an interview with the Dutch news channel Panorama, Alistair Overeem, who is 43 years old and has a final record of 47-19-1NC in MMA and 10-4-1NC in kickboxing, declared his retirement from martial arts.

During his tenure since making his debut in 1999, Overeem achieved numerous career highs. In Pride FC, “The Demolition Man” rose to prominence as one of their most accomplished and well-known fighters. His most famous triumph came in the promotion against Vitor Belfort. He competed in three Pride tournaments. After leaving Pride, Overeem won the heavyweight championships of Strikeforce and Dynamite!! (DREAM) before deciding to join the UFC in 2011.

The career highlights for Overeem in K-1’s kickboxing division included his stunning upset victory over Peter Aerts, which earned him the K-1 World Grand Prix, and his two fights with Moroccan veteran Badr Hari, in which both men won by finishes.

In a recent Instagram post, which was soon taken down, the fighter stated: “With this post I will officially announce an end to my fighting career.” He additionally wrote,“ My fight just isn’t over yet. I will continue my fight in the Dutch politics and in promoting mental&physical health all across the globe.

For those who are unaware, Overeem defeated Brock Lesnar in their bout in 2011 when the American fighter was at the height of his MMA career. Overeem, who last competed in 2021, has since announced his retirement from combat sports and has stated that he would pursue politics, which will be an intriguing career path.
