At UFC 264, McGregor last competed in July 2021. For the second bout in a row, the former two-division UFC champion faced Dustin Poirier. The Irishman lost through medical stoppage after suffering a terrible leg injury in the first round. Before contemplating a potential return date, McGregor went through a protracted healing process.

Following his injury, the Dubliner withdrew from the USADA drug-testing pool. McGregor is therefore ineligible to come back unless he is granted a waiver or passes six months’ worth of random tests. The Notorious anticipates receiving the go-ahead to fight by the end of 2023.
