Dustin Poirier Gets Honest About BMF Champion Earning a Title Shot Against Islam Makhachev
In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, Dustin Poirier admitted that if Beneil Dariush defeats Charles Oliveira at UFC 289, it will be hard to deny him a title shot. When Ariel Helwani asked him about the title shot Poirier said, “I don’t know man, if Beneil (Dariush) goes out there and wins, we can’t say no, right? But also, this is the fight business. It’s not fair business, Ariel, so we just scrap and see what happens.”
Poirier makes a fair point. While the BMF Championship will bring major hype and attention, it is still an unofficial title. The UFC lightweight championship is the real prize, and Dariush would have a strong case for a shot if he picks up another top win. At the same time, Poirier vs. Gaethje is a highly anticipated rematch that would also warrant a title shot with an impressive victory.
The UFC will have options, but as Poirier said, the fight business isn’t always fair. If Dariush wins at UFC 289, the UFC may opt to have the BMF Champion defend that unofficial title again rather than earn an immediate title shot.
There are many moving parts, but Poirier and Gaethje will do their best to make a strong case for a championship opportunity when they meet at UFC 291. The octagon will determine who ultimately gets the next crack at Makhachev’s belt.
