UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev is set to defend his title against a well-known opponent, Charles Oliveira, at UFC 294 on October 21. However, after this fight, Makhachev has expressed his intention to move to a different weight category and take a belt in another division, a thing that Khabib Nurmagomedov never achieved. He has also mentioned the fight that he desires the most.
Islam Makhachev seeks to accomplish what Khabib Nurmagomedov couldn’t
Islam Makhachev expresses his desire to challenge for the welterweight title after his upcoming fight. He specifically aims to face Colby Covington to test his Dagestani wrestling against American wrestling.
“I don’t know what the UFC has planned, but my dream fight is for the second belt,I gave a chance to that guy, so they have to give me a chance, too. I gave a chance to a guy from another division to come to my weight and to try to take this belt, and he lost. I want my chance, too.” (H/T:ESPN)
Despite acknowledging the challenge, Makhachev sees this bout as his most coveted fight. He believes moving to a different weight class, something Nurmagomedov didn’t achieve, is his next goal.
With the lightweight title already in his grasp, Makhachev aims to become a two-division champion by securing the welterweight title.
UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards will be fighting Colby Covington at UFC 296 in December. This means Islam Makhachev won’t be able to have his desired fight against Colby this year and will have to wait longer for his most anticipated matchup. Whether Islam can achieve what Khabib couldn’t by winning multiple titles remains uncertain. Time will reveal the answer.
