However, after the title defense, things began to become more challenging. The 36-year-old was most last seen competing on Oct. 22 at UFC 280, where he was defeated through second-round technical knockout at the hands of current 135-pound champion Aljamain Sterling.

The former champion’s decision to step away from competing came after his unsuccessful bantamweight title quest at UFC 280 where he was taken out within two rounds by Aljamain Sterling.
Dillashaw had a shoulder ailment going into the title battle, and it showed as the fight went to the ground and he started writhing in discomfort.
The 36-year-old got to his feet, but his coach had to snap his dislocated shoulder back into place after he barely made it through the first round. However, it didn’t help him much, as his dislocated shoulder popped out again as he stood defenseless facing his opponent.
Dillashaw’s announced his retirement from MMA shortly after undergoing his shoulder surgery, after the match with Sterling. He mentioned that he had had few injuries during the training camp, but he did not want to pull himself out of the fight.

As per his doctors, he might have to undergo a second surgery in future, the condition of his shoulder was one of the worst cases that the doctors and seen and said, that the fighter shall take a long time to completely recover himself. The sudden announcement of the professional fighters retirement came as a shock to both the TJ Dillashaw’s agent and the UFC.
There were some controversies throughout Dillashaw’s tenure. USADA banned him for two years for testing positive for EPO in 2019, while he was competing against then-flyweight champion Henry Cejudo in an effort to become a two-weight titleholder. He lost against Cejudo through knockout in the first round.
Dillashaw’s retirement has nothing to do with USADA. With a 17-5 record, Dillashaw has finally decided to take a permanent break from his MMA career.
