Criminal Charges on Zakir Naik
In November 2016, the Indian counter-terrorism agency lodged a formal complaint against Naik, stating that he had participated in an unlawful activity and encouraged religious intolerance.
Naik relocated to Malaysia the following year and submitted an asylum request. He was granted legal residence there. One of the 16 Muslim intellectuals from Malaysia who are currently exiled is Naik. In March of this year, the Home Ministry declared the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), created by Naik, to be an unlawful group and made it illegal for five years.
India has written to Malaysia requesting his extradition as well. Naik has permanent resident status in Malaysia. However, he was prohibited from giving talks in 2020 owing to “national security” issues.
Local authorities questioned him about his desire to disturb the peace by making statements about the Hindu and Chinese groups that inhabited the Muslim-majority country after he was accused of making inflammatory remarks.
