The bout was stopped by the referee when Russia’s Makhachev, 31, downed Volkanovski, 35, with a left high kick. After Makhachev’s tight victory in February, the victory puts an end to their rivalry.
Additionally, it almost puts an end to Volkanovski’s chances of capturing a second featherweight championship. After Brazil’s Charles Oliveria withdrew due to injury, Volkanovski agreed to face Makhachev on 12-day notice.
Alexander Volkanovski was kicked in the head by Islam Makhachev, who then pursued him to the ground and unleashed nine unanswered punches until referee Marc Goddard stopped the match with more than three minutes remaining in the opening frame.
Volkanovski was defeated for the first time in his UFC career and has now dropped two straight matches for the first time in his professional MMA career. Knowing Volkanovski, he’ll be eager to return as quickly as possible to reclaim this fight and return to his own weight class, where he reigns supreme in the featherweight division.
After winning all six of his fights in the UFC and most recently defeating former interim featherweight championship challenger Josh Emmett, Ilia Topuria has established his claim as the next contender for the featherweight division. Since entering the octagon, he has established himself as a dominant force, and as a professional mixed martial artist, he has never lost. Four of his six UFC victories have occurred inside the distance, which makes him a serious challenger to Alexander Volkanovski, the reigning featherweight champion.
