Jorge Masvidal said ‘Perhaps this is the last time. If I come out on the losing end, it will be game over for me. Yet, success against Gilbert indicates positive development. Thus, if I take a chance and play my cards well, I intend to win big. ‘

Masvidal has been in the industry for about twenty years. Although he didn’t start fighting professionally until 2003, he was a regular in the Legendary Kimbo Slice Home Brawls. Before signing with the UFC in 2013, he competed in the AFC, Bodog, Strikeforce, and Bellator.

Masvidal, who had previously competed in the lightweight weight class, climbed to the 170-pound weight class in 2017. In 2019, he knocked out Ben Askren in only five seconds with a flying knee that became a viral sensation. It was also the year he defeated Nate Diaz for the first time at UFC 244 to claim the newly created BMF championship.

Masvidal lost two attempts at defending his title. In March of 2022, he faced up against his ex-training partner and eventual decision opponent, Colby Covington.

If Jorge Masvidal loses to Gilbert Burns this weekend, he is seriously considering leaving the UFC.

This weekend in Miami, on the undercard of Israel Adesanya’s rematch with Alex Pereira, UFC veteran Masvidal will return to the octagon to face fellow welterweight contender Burns at UFC 287. In the twilight of his career, Masvidal faces what could be his final opportunity to contend for the 170-pound title he has long sought but never won.
