UFC 284 RECAP: Islam Makhachev defeats Alexander Volkanovski

Islam Makhachev defeats Alexander Volkanovski in a unanimous judgment (48-47, 48-47, 49-46) in the main event of UFC 284. To successfully defend his lightweight title for the first fight, Islam Makhachev called his shot and went for it. He traveled to Perth, Australia, and defeated featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski.

In the opening 15 minutes, the burgeoning Russian standout traded with Volkanovski for extended periods, outperforming him in the exchanges and displaying his quickness and agility throughout the first three rounds. “Alexander the Great” was successful and had an incredible capacity to resist Makhachev’s takedown attempts, but the lightweight champion was too much.

UFC 284 RECAP: Yair Rodriguez becomes interim UFC featherweight champion

At 4:19 of Round 2, Yair Rodriguez submitted Josh Emmett using a triangle choke. Nine years after making his promotional debut and after years of predictions that he would win the championship, “El Pantera” delivered his best performance at the pinnacle of his career.

In the first round, the 30-year-old Mexican fighter battered Josh Emmett with vicious body kicks and clean, varied combinations. Despite being knocked down by Emmett’s power shot near the first period’s conclusion, Rodriguez rebounded quickly and played strong defense.

He struck Emmett early in the second, focusing on specific areas and delivering intense strikes before landing a flying knee that caused Vaseline to fly off Emmett’s head. Although the American challenger used it to knock Rodriguez to the ground, the energetic Chihuahuan athlete utilized it to build up and lock in a triangle choke, which caused Emmett to submit.
