UFC 281: Alex Pereira comes from behind to win in fifth round

Only Alex Pereira has ever had a KO win over Israel Adesanya, and he’s done it twice. In the fifth round, Adesanya was attacked by Pereira, who pounded him against the fence with powerful shots. Until the referee stepped in, Adesanya desperately dodged and weaved but took huge blows and uppercuts.

In another knockout on the main card, Dan Hooker stopped Claudio Puelles in the second round with a sequence of devastating body kicks, giving him a victory that was desperately needed.

UFC 281: Sad ending for Frankie Edgar

Meanwhile, Frankie Edgar’s illustrious career did not have a happily ever after. Chris Gutierrez brutally kneed Edgar, who was competing in his final match before quitting the sport, knocking him to the ground and ending the bantamweight contest in the first round.

  • Weili Zhang def. Carla Esparza (c) via second-round submission (rear-naked choke).
  • Dustin Poirier def. Michael Chandler via third-round submission (rear-naked choke).
  • Chris Gutierrez def. Frankie Edgar via first-round knockout (knee)
  • Dan Hooker, def. Claudio Puelles via second-round knockout (body kick)

In a standard PPV of UFC 281, five bouts featured in the early prelims, followed by four matches in the prelims right before the main card.

Prelims

There were four matches in the prelims of UFC 281. There was only a single knockout win as Ryan Spann def. Dominick Reyes via KO, 1:20 of round 1. With a front kick, Reyes initiated the contact. Reyes swayed away when Spann connected on a right jab. Reyes was knocked out cold by a jab from Spann. The other two matches concluded with two submission and an unanimous decision respectively. 

  • Renato Moicano def. Brad Riddell via rear-naked choke submission, 3:20 of round 1
  • Ryan Spann def. Dominick Reyes via KO, 1:20 of round 1
  • Erin Blanchfield def. Molly McCann via kimura submission, 3:27 of round 1
  • Andre Petroski vs. Wellington Turman via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Early Prelims

Meanwhile in Early Prelims, there were two knockouts and a technical knockouts in five bouts of UFC 281. Matt Frevola defeated Ottman Azaitar via KO as he landed a clean left hook to the jaw that droped Azaitar. In the third match of Early prelims, Mike Trizano defeated Choi Seung-woo via TKO, in 4:51 of round 1. Meanwhile in the fifth match, Carlos Ulberg defeated Nicolae Negumereanu via KO, 3:44 of round 1 as Ulberg landed a check left hook that droped Negumereanu. The other two matches were decided via Unanimous decision.

  • Karolina Kowalkiewicz def. Silvana Gomez Juarez via unanimous decision (29-28 on all cards)
