Uber Cup LIVE – India beat USA 4-1; PV Sindhu beats Jennie Gai LIVE: Ace shuttler PV Sindhu has given a flying start to India in their second-round fixture against USA. Sindhu registered a straight-sets victory against Jennie Gai to give India 1-0 lead against USA in UBER Cup Tie. India’s Double pair of Tanasha Crasto & Treesa Jolly later increased the lead to 2-0. India, who had defeated Canada 4-1 in their opening tie, notched up a second successive win to cement their position in the top two spot in their group to qualify for the quarterfinals.

Sindhu once again led the proceedings with a 21-10, 21-11 win over Jennie Gai, doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Treesa Jolly then beat Francesca Corbett and Allison Lee 21-19, 21-10 before Aakashi Kashyap notched up a 21-18, 21-11 victory over Esther Shi as India took an unassailable 3-0 lead.

Young doubles pair of Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker then went down fighting to Lauren Lam and Kodi Tang Lee 12-21, 21-17, 13-21 to salvage some pride for USA.

In the final match, Ashmita Chaliha prevailed 21-18, 21-13 over Natalie Chi to wrap up the match.

Indian women’s team, which has won two bronze medals in the past, will next face Korea on Wednesday in their last group match.

The Indian men’s team also qualified for the knockout stage after ensuring their place in the top two in their group.

First Singles: PV Sindhu vs Jennie Gai

World No.7 PV Sindhu will face 95th ranked Jennie Gai in the first match of the day. Sindhu, who defeated Michelle Li in straight sets in her previous game will be the overwhelming favourite in this contest.

Meanwhile, Jennie Gai will be playing her first match in singles as she featured in the doubles in USA’s previous match. Gai’s best performance is a quarterfinal appearance at Ukraine Open earlier this year.

First Doubles: Crasto – Jolly vs Corbett – Lee 

Tanisha Crasto and Treesa Jolly, who partnered together for the first time this year started the Uber Cup campaign on a positive note by winning against Canada’s Catherine Choi and Josephine Wu in straight sets. The Indian duo will look to continue their good form when they face America’s Francesca Corbett and Allison Lee. Corbett and Lee faced straight set defeat in their previous encounter against Korea and once again they will be up for a tough challenge from the Indians.

Second Singles: Aakarshi Kashyap vs Esther Shi 

Aakarshi Kashyap clinched a come-from-behind victory against Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang in her opening round contest after losing the first set. She will now take on USA’s Esther Shi, who is ranked 202 in the world and enters the contest as a overwhelming favourite.

Esther Shi finished as a semifinalist at Estonian International in January this year and then made a quarter-final appearance in the Swedish Open. She faced Korea’s Sim Yu Jin in the previous match and faced a straight set defeat.

Second Doubles: Singhi – Thaker vs Lam – Lee 

Simran Singhi, who partnered Shruti Mishra against Canada will reunite with her partner Ritika Thaker against USA. Maharashtra duo Ritika and Simran, who were not originally part of the Indian squad were named as replacement to Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy. They will now take on Lauren Lam and Kodi Tang Lee. The duo will partner for the first time in the tournament.

For USA, Lauren Lam played the singles in the previous match against Korea, while Kodi Tang Lee didn’t feature in the playing squad in the last game.


Third Singles: Ashmitha Chaliha vs Natalie Chi 

Ashmitha Chaliha, who won her previous game in three sets will take on Natalie Chi, who is ranked way below 500 in the BWF rankings. Chi enters the contest after facing a 21-19, 21-9 defeat against Seo Jin Lee in her previous game.
