TUF 31 Episode 4: UFC News: Tuesday’s Episode 4 of “The Ultimate Fighter 31: Team McGregor vs. Team Chandler participated in a battle that had been postponed earlier in the season due to a cold sore. Follow UFC News Updates with InsideSports.IN.

Wells cold sore on his face forced the postponement of Valiev and Wells’ battle earlier in the season. Given the scheduling glitch, there was some debate as to whether the fight should be altered to a catchweight contest. Chandler insisted that the boxers be asked to make smaller cuts, while McGregor’s camp wanted the bigger Valiev to make a bigger sacrifice. The sides ultimately agreed on a catchweight of 142 pounds.

The fight between Timur Valiev and Trevor Wells took place in the Bantamweight division. It was the quarterfinal bout. In the test episode, squad Chandler defeated McGregor’s squad 4-0 with ease. In the most recent scheduled match, Timur Valiev (18-3, 1 NC) defeated Team McGregor’s Trevor Wells (8-3) by unanimous decision. As Chandler’s team attempts to sweep the opposition and leave McGregor’s team in the dust, the series is looking to be a one-sided affair.

Team McGregor’s 0-3 record in the Ultimate Fighter Series was evident from the promos, so the Irish fighter brought in a heavyweight with a strong striking style to try to turn things around. Stephen Thompson, a former welterweight title contender, was on hand to instruct McGregor’s squad in punching technique and help them develop their striking abilities. And both athletes successfully lost weight.

The fight turned out to be more competitive than one may have anticipated considering the difference in experience and previous level of competition between this week’s opponents, that brief drama aside. In Round 1, Wells displayed strong defence in both the striking and grappling departments, catching Valiev with powerful jabs and shrugging the Dagestani fighter off when he grabbed his back. Valiev, though, also had success in the sparring matches as his right hand kept connecting with Wells’ chin.

Valiev dominated the second round after landing a wonderfully timed takedown early in the round. He then spent the rest of the round working from inside Wells’ half-guard. Wells stopped Valiev from moving forward, but he had to hold off relentless ground and pound before a last-second turnabout that was too little, too late.

The four UFC veterans who have competed for Chandler thus far—lightweights Roosevelt Roberts and Austin Hubbard, and bantamweights Valiev and Cody Gibson—have all raised their hands.

Here are the quarterfinal results so far:

  • Roosevelt Roberts def. Nate Jennerman via first-round KO
  • Cody Gibson def. Mando Gutierrez via first-round TKO
  • Austin Hubbard def. Aaron McKenzie via unanimous decision
  • Timur Valiev def. Trevor Wells via unanimous decision

Team Chandler has been leading the scoreboard till now. It looks like Conor’s team has already lost the TUF 31 championship.
