Real Madrid vs Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League: In a surprising change of stance, Jamie Carragher has acknowledged that Trent Alexander-Arnold may not be the right fit for Liverpool if they aspire to compete in the Champions League, urging the team to seek a new right-back.

Despite previously advocating for Alexander-Arnold, the former Liverpool player’s recent comments highlight persistent doubts about the defender’s defensive abilities. Despite being a regular feature in Liverpool’s team and a product of their academy, the 24-year-old has struggled to earn a spot in the England national team due to his limitations.

As Liverpool experiences a noticeable decline this season, Alexander-Arnold’s weaknesses have become increasingly apparent.

Following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s recent defensive error, Carragher expressed concern about his continued struggles in that area, stating that it cannot continue. The pundit also questioned the advice being given to the right-back and emphasized the need for competition to push him to improve.

He added: “He’s won everything, done fantastic and I’m so proud of him, but he needs help. He needs to have a long think at the end of the season about where he is as a right-back. I’ve always defended him and he’s played for one of the best teams in the world which means you do a lot more attacking than you do defend.

While Alexander-Arnold’s attacking prowess has previously compensated for his defensive weaknesses, Carragher questioned whether this is still a sustainable strategy, particularly as Liverpool aims to secure a top-four finish during their transition phase.

This summer, Liverpool is anticipated to undertake significant transfers; however, acquiring a right-back is not considered a priority. Instead, the club’s aging midfield is deemed to be a problematic area, and they are said to have their sights set on players like Jude Bellingham to address this concern.
