Indian Hockey Team wins Asian Champions Trophy
At the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai on Saturday, India overcame a 1-3 deficit to defeat Malaysia by a score of 4-3. It was a thrilling end to the brilliant Asian Champions Trophy.
For India, there were goals from Harmanpreet Singh (ninth minute penalty kick), Gurjant Singh (45′), Akashdeep Singh (56′), and Jugraj Singh. The game was turned around by the two goals India scored towards the end of the third quarter.
In the semifinals, Indian Hockey Team destroyed Japan 5-0 while Malaysia destroyed South Korea 6-2. India scored a 5-0 round-robin league victory over Malaysia.
India’s semifinal performance against Japan was as near to flawless as they can get. The offense was at its most creative but the defense held strong—India did not allow even a single penalty corner, let Japan enter their “D” only eight times, and allowed just one shot on goal.
Each of the four field goals and the five distinct goal scorers outperformed the last, displaying patience, talent, ingenuity, and audacity.
