Carey was locked in battle with Josh Inglis, but a timely century in the final game before selection sealed the deal and the left-hander was called up to the squad.

Alex Carey is the first Australian wicketkeeper to make their Test debut at home since Adam Gilchrist in 1999. He replaces Tim Paine, who withdrew from the squad citing a mental health break following the public release of his sexting scandal. He has represented Australia in 45 one-day internationals and 38 T20 matches. “Alex has been a regular member of the national side in white-ball cricket, particularly in the one-day game,” selectors chairman George Bailey said in a statement on Thursday.
