Australian Open: Rohan Bopanna sizzles again, moves a step closer to trophy

Australian Open 2024: Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden are seeded second in the men's doubles.

Indian tennis veteran Rohan Bopanna made it to the second round of the Australian Open 2024, along with his partner Matthew Ebden, as the duo defeated the Aussie team of John Millman and Edward Winter 6-2, 6-4 on Friday. This was a relatively easy match, as compared to their first round encounter against James Duckworth and Marc Polmans, where Bopanna/Ebden duo had to dig deep to post a 7-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-2) win.

Now, in the next round, the Indo-Aussie team will be up against the 14th seeds, Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic on January 21. Surprisingly, Bopanna has never gone beyond the third round at the Australian Open, but given the form he is in, even a title win cannot be ruled out.

Bopanna/Ebden were truly clinical and had 1st serve win % of 79. To add to that, there were hardly any unforced errors on the part of the team. They had just two double faults combined.

Sumit Nagal Gains Big

On the other hand, Indian singles ace Sumit Nagal, who was ousted from the second round of the tournament, has climbed up in the live ATP rankings. He has achieved a career-best ranking of 118 for now. In the first round, he beat Alexander Bublik, who is ranked 27th in the world, and then lost to JC Shang of China in the second.
