A special spectator watched on from the stands when Neeraj Chopra competed at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich. Tennis great Roger Federer enjoyed the athletics spectacle in his hometown along with his family.
The 20-time grand slam winner was in attendance with spouse Mirka, their daughters Charlene Riva and Myla Rose. Federer’s parents Robert and Lynette were also present on Thursday night.
The Tennis great’s presence in the stadium was probably unknown to Neeraj. However, but other athletes such as Noah Lyles of the United States showed their appreciation when they came to know.
Noah, who won the 200 meters in 19.80 seconds, replied to one of the posts on X (previously Twitter) regarding the topic. He remarked, “The beat in the world watching the best in the world.”
Federer follows other sports. His love for cricket is well known, showcased by him in different instances. He once got caught in the middle of the India-Pakistan rivalry. Federer holding the India ODI cricket team’s shirt in 2015 as part of a marketing campaign for Nike infuriated the Pakistan fans. Federer was quick to apologise and declare his allegiance to South Africa.
Neeraj’s disappointing outing
The presence of Federer could not spur Neeraj to an inspired performance as Neeraj finished second with his best throw on the night which went to a distance of 85.71m.
The Olympic gold winner from Khandra, who secured the World Athletics Championship gold too in Hungary earlier in the week with a mammoth throw of 88.17m, opened the night with a throw of 80.79m on his first attempt.
Neeraj made foul throws in his second and third attempts as he slid down to the fifth spot.
His fourth attempt of 85.71m secured the second spot.
Neeraj finished second in the Zurich leg by virtue of his 85.71m, which is disappointing considering the Javelin thrower’s fine form recently.,
