After being rescued from bankruptcy, Manchester United became privately owned in 1902.

In 1984, Robert Maxwell, a media tycoon made a takeover bid. Five years later, a similar bid was made by Michael Knighton, a property trader. Following another ownership bid in 1998 by the Rupert Murdoch-owned BSkyB, American entrepreneur Malcolm Glazer grabbed a 15% shareholding in 2003.

Increasing his stake steadily, Glazer delisted the company from the London Stock Exchange in 2005. The Glazer family eventually gained complete ownership for a final purchase price of nearly £800 million.

Manchester United’s History

When the club was founded in 1878, it was known as ‘Newton Heath FC;’ the name was changed to Manchester United in 1902. The club won a maiden title six years later. However, the Red Devils became a major force only in the fifties. On the watch of Sir Matt Busby, United won three titles over a decade. In 1957, Sir Busby led the club in the European Cup, a first for an English club.

Tragedy struck in 1958, when the whole team perished in a plane crash while returning from a match in Europe. Busby, a survivor of the crash, joined hands with Sir Bobby Charlton — renowned as the greatest ever United player — to rebuild the team. Before he retired in 1969, Busby led the team to two league titles and a first European Cup.

No other manager enjoyed the same kind of success until the arrival of Sir Alex Ferguson in 1986. On Ferguson’s watch, United won 13 Premier League in addition to 2 Champions League trophies. The team enjoyed peak success in the 1998-99 season when they won the treble comprising the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League.
