So far in the T20 World Cup, a minimum of 5 overs is required for a game to be considered a result. The rule was why SouthAfrica missed out on a win over Zimbabwe, with their rain-marred game stopped after just 3.2 overs into the chase on what seemed like a straightforward victory.
With the weather skewing many games, the ICC have added reserve days to the semi-final matches. Reserve days were not scheduled for the group stage games and a rain interruption meant that the overs were reduced or the teams shared points in case of a no result.
Famously, India’s semi-final in the 2019 World Cup vs NewZealand was moved to a reserve day due to rain. With rains wreaking havoc in Australia, a similar situation would not be unprecedented.
As for the match conditions, a minimum of 10 overs will be required for a result to be declared. The margin is twice as of the previous rule, as ICC intends to provide the fans the best experience and the players a fair opportunity as a result. The same will be in place for the final at the MCG on November 13.

The 13.7.2.1.2 rule of ICC’s law states, “The revision of the number of overs should ensure, whenever possible, that both teams have the opportunity of batting for the same number of overs. The team batting second shall not bat for a greater number of overs than the first team unless the latter completed its innings in less than its allocated overs.”
“To constitute a match, a minimum of 5 overs have to be bowled to the side batting second, subject to a result not being achieved earlier. For the semi-finals and final, a minimum of 10 overs have to be bowled to the side batting second, subject to a result not being achieved earlier,” the rule further states.
As things stand, NewZealand and England have sealed their places in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup. Defending champions Australia have been knocked out on net run rate The other two semi-finalists will be decided on Sunday, with India, Pakistan, SouthAfrica, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh all in contention.
