Swapna Barman does damage control, apologizes to Nandini Agasara in transgender case

The unpleasant 'transgender' controversy had come out three days back after Nandini Agasara pipped Swapna Barman to win bronze medal at Asian Games.

Indian heptathlete Swapna Barman has issued an unconditional apology to compatriot Nandini Agasara in the ‘transgender case’. Just a few days back, after losing out on a bronze medal at the Asian Games, the 2018 champion Barman had accused Agasara of being transgender. She had put out a tweet regarding the same and subsequently deleted it after facing backlash.

While apologizing, she wrote on Twitter, “I wish to tender my unconditional apology for my tweet the other day, especially to my co-athlete was the sheer disappointment and momentous emotional outburst which made me react in this manner against the ethos of sports and deeply feel sorry everyone for my emotional reaction.”

The entire drama had unfolded when Nandini Agasara pipped Swapna Barma of the bronze medal by just four points. Appealing to the world she had written, “I have lost my Asian Games bronze medal to transgender women at the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China. I want my medal back as it is against the rules of our athletics. Help me and support me, please. #protestforfairplay.”

In response to this allegation, Agasara had said, that she would definitely raise the entire matter with the AFI. She also questioned Barman’s ethics for saying such nasty things to a woman. Agasara also added that Barman should have refrained from making such comments in a foreign land, which tarnishes India’s image.
