Sunil Chhetri, Sandesh Jhingan, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu to lead India at Asian Games

Igor Stimac's Indian Football Team will be led by Sunil Chhetri, Sandesh Jhingan, and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu in the Asian Games 2023.

Captain Sunil Chhetri, senior defender Sandesh Jhingan, and first-choice custodian Gurpreet Singh Sandhu have been named to the Indian Football Team’s squad for the Asian Games 2023. On Tuesday, August 1, 2023, Head Coach Igor Stimac revealed a 22-member roster for the 19th Asian Games. It will be held in Hangzhou, China, from September 19 to October 7, 2023.

Asian Games champions twice over India is participating in the tournament for the first time in nine years. The India Men’s team is in Group A with hosts China PR, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. This Indian squad has been approved by the Asian Games organisers and the Olympic Council of Asia, according to reports.

The Indian men’s and women’s football teams’ participation at the Hangzhou Games was previously in doubt. It was done in accordance with the sports ministry’s criteria of sending teams ranked in the top eight in the continent.

Following an appeal from the AIFF, the government later cleared both teams by easing the requirements. Stimac, the head coach, has also requested the involvement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Asian Games football tournament is typically a U23 affair. However, due to the one-year delay in organising, the organisers have permitted individuals aged 24 to compete. The cut-off date for birth was set at January 1, 1999.

Defenders: Sandesh Jhingan, Anwar Ali, Narender Gahlot, Lalchungnunga, Akash Mishra, Roshan Singh, Ashish Rai.

Midfielders: Jeakson Singh Thounaojam, Suresh Singh Wangjam, Apuia Ralte, Amarjit Singh Kiyam, Rahul KP, Naorem Mahesh Singh.

Forwards: Siva Sakthi Narayanan, Rahim Ali, Aniket Jadhav, Vikram Partap Singh, Rohit Danu, Sunil Chhetri.
