Sunil had a grand campaign in the three games that were played at the Salt Lake Stadium. India was clubbed with Cambodia, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong and topped the group after comfortably defeating their three opponents.
Following the AFC campaign, Sunil Chhetri paid a visit to his in-laws in Kolkata where according to the customary Bengali tradition he was met with a grand reception. Following the tradition, his footprints in the house were recorded and then treated to a sumptuous treat.
His father-in-law, former Indian football stalwart Subrata Bhataccharya was present and was seen having a chat with the skipper in a happy mood. Chhetri was then treated to a full-course Bengali meal at the house of his in-laws.

Sunil scored a total of 4 goals in the last three matches of the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers. He bagged a brace in the opening game against Cambodia which India won 2-0. In the following encounter against Afghanistan, Chhetri opened the scoresheet for the Men in Blue with a sublime free-kick.

His final goal came in the last match against Hong Kong where he extended India’s lead to 2-0 after a superb free-kick fell into his path. with that goal, Sunil went on to register his 84th goal for India and went on level terms with Hungary football legend, Ferenc Puskas. He is now the third-highest active goal scorer in international football. Only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are ahead of him in terms of goal count.
