Sunil Chhetri were adjudged Sportsmen of the Year in Team Sports at the 2023 Sportstar Aces Awards in Mumbai on Monday. “It is amazing to see my childhood heroes Mr. Anand, Mr. Gavaskar, Leander Paes, Shyam Thapa sir. My father’s childhood hero Bhaichung Bhutia. I want to wish all the important stakeholders of sports in this room all the very best. My vision and dream of seeing India become a sporting culture, of every kid getting identified at the right time.” Chhetri said while accepting the award.

“We are finally being able to use the 1.4 billion people, for which we are blamed for by the whole world, and utilise them in the proper way… I want to wish all the athletes here an injury-free year, all the very best in what you do. I keep watching your videos and get inspired a lot.” he added.

Putting a video of the same on his Instagram story, Bhaichung Bhutia expressed that it was nearly impossible given the Bhutanese striker is only 3 years older than Chhetri. As Chhetri enters the final phase of a long and illustrious career, parallels will be drawn between him and Bhaichung Bhutia. Both were the torchbearers of Indian football in their respective eras.

Bhutia already had a solid reputation in the starting lineup in 2005 when Chhetri made his national team debut. Together, they participated in the 2007 and 2009 Nehru Cup championship teams as well as the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup victory. For India, their collaboration in attack was quite successful. In the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup semifinal against Myanmar, Chhetri scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory with Bhaichung’s help to advance India to the final.

In the championship match against Tajikistan, which India won 4-1 thanks to a hat-trick from Sunil Chhetri, Bhutia also scored a goal. During a 2-0 friendly victory over Nepal in 2013, Chhetri scored his 43rd goal for his country, surpassing Bhaichung’s total and moving into first place overall with a far higher strike rate.

After more than 17 years with the senior national men’s squad, Chhetri is still the face of Indian football. The 38-year-old Indian captain demonstrated why he is still crucial to his team by scoring four goals to secure India’s second-consecutive qualifying to the 2023 AFC Asian Cup’s main round. Because to his extensive time spent playing at the highest level, Chhetri is a legend in his own right. He has had great success while playing for some of the top Indian football clubs.
