Sumit Nagal on a roll, beats D Novak and Jakub Mensik to reach Tali Open quarters

Sumit Nagal has shown good form at the Tali Open so far, having gotten the better of higher-ranked D Novak & Jakub Mensik

India’s no. 1 tennis player in men’s singles, Sumit Nagal has displayed tremendous form this week in Helsinki at the Tali Open 2023, as he first beat D Novak 6-2, 6-3 on Tuesday, and then followed it up with another win against the world no. 155 Jakub Mensik 7-5, 6-2, to enter the quarters.

Sumit Nagal in Last Few Tournaments

In the run-up to the Tali Open 125, Nagal had a few results that did not go his way. At the Shanghai Masters, the world no. 169 lost in straight sets to Luke Saville of Australia 6-3, 6-2. Similar was the case in the Swiss Open Indoors, when he lost to world no. 75 Dominik Koepfer 6-3, 1-6, 6-7, in the qualifiers.

Sumit Nagal Opens up on Financial Struggle

Nagal, who trains in Germany at the Nansel Tennis Academy, under Sasha Nanel, had opened up about his financial woes. He had told PTI, “If I look at my bank balance, I have what I had at the beginning of the year. It is 900 euros (approx ₹80,000). I did get a bit of help. Mr Prashant Sutar is helping me with MAHA Tennis Foundation and I also get a monthly (salary) from IOCL but I don’t have any big sponsor.”
