Not Neeraj Chopra, but this Indian holds world record in men’s javelin

While Neeraj Chopra might be the best in men's javelin, Sumit Antil is at the top in para javelin, and would be in action at Asian Para Games.

There is hardly any doubt that javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is not only one of the greatest athletes in India but in the world as well. He has won just about every tournament in the world and would be again eyeing a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. He has been the national record holder with a best of 89.94m and is slated to break the 90m mark soon.

He had shot to fame back in 2016 and since then has brought a medal in every competition he has participated in. Then, at the U-20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz, he recorded a massive throw of 86.48m, which brought him the title. To add to that, he created a world record in the category, which stands to date, beating the 84.69m mark set by Latvia’s Zigismunds Sirmais. Having said that, there is one area where Neeraj is some distance away.

As far as the world record in the senior category is concerned, Zan Železný has the longest throw in history at 98.48m. The Indian will have to really give it his all if he wants to reach there.

But India still does have a world record in men’s javelin, albeit in the para category. Sumit Antil, Tokyo 2020 Paralympics winner, and the 2023 World Championships winner, holds the world record in men’s para javelin in the F64 category. He has a best throw of a massive 70.83m which he set earlier this year, at the World Championships in Paris.
