Star Sports confirm EXIT, FSDL float tender for ISL Broadcasting rights

Although Viacom18 is slated to take over, FSDL has launched an invitation to tender for ISL broadcasting and media rights.

For the first time, FSDL has floated the tender for ISL broadcasting rights. With the exit of Star Sports, they remain convinced that there would be significant interest. It will help unlock the value it has produced for Indian football since its tenth edition. The closed auction process will be managed by Octagon, a reputable media rights firm located in the United States.

Three FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers, to be played during the international window in November, March, and June, as well as home games for the national team, have been added to the tender.

With Viacom18, Reliance is aiming to aggressively grow its entertainment industry. Despite being a part of the bidding process, Viacom18 is heavily backed to have the media rights to the ISL starting with the upcoming season.

Star Sports has aired ISL since its debut in 2014 in a variety of languages. ISL, a project of FSDL, is owned by Disney Star (35%), and Reliance Industries Ltd. (65%).

The five and four-year arrangement for Disney Star’s broadcast rights expired last season, which led FSDL to announce the tender. The tender has been announced to all parties by FSDL, and a broadcaster should be in place in 15 to 20 days.

However, other broadcasters like Sony Pictures Networks India and Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd would not take part in the bidding process given Reliance’s controlling ownership of the league.

The upcoming ISL edition is scheduled to start sometime in the last week of September. For the first time since it began as an eight-franchise, three-month league, it will include 12 teams. After qualifying by winning the I-League, RoundGlass Punjab FC will make their debut.
