Sudirman Cup Highlights: India LOSE 0-5 vs Malaysia – India suffered a crashing 0-5 defeat against Malaysia in the Sudirman Cup 2023 group encounter on Monday. With the loss, India’s chances of qualifying for the quarterfinal has come to an end. On the day when none of the Indian shuttlers managed to win th tie, PV Sindhu was the only one who took her contest into the third game. Mixed Doubles – Dhruv Kapila/Ashwini Ponnappa vs Goh Soon Huat/Lai Shevon Jemie –

Men’s Singles – Kidambi Srikanth LOST TO Lee Zii Jia – 16-21, 11-21

Women’s Singles – PV Sindhu LOST TO Goh Jin Wei – 21-14, 10-21, 20-22

Men’s Doubles – Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty vs Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik

Women’s Doubles – Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand LOST TO Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan – 15-21, 13-21

The pair of Dhruv Kapila and Ashwini Ponnappa opened the day with a loss in straight games Malaysia’s Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie, going down 16-21, 17-21. Kidambhi Srikanth then lost against Lee Zii Jia with a score of 16-21, 11-21. Sindhu faced a lower-ranked Goh Jin Wei and won the first game. However she ended up losing the contest 21-14, 10-21, 20-22.

Men’s Doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty ended up losing in straight games against World No.3 pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik. In the final contest of the day, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand lost 15-21, 13-21 against Thinaah Muralitharan and Pearly Tan.

Mixed Doubles

In the Mixed Doubles, Ashwini Ponnappa and Dhruv Kapila paired up for the first time in the tournament. Playing against the Malaysian duo of Goh Soon Huat, who are ranked No.8 in the world, the Indian pair struggled.

Right from the start, trhe Malaysian duo had an upperhand in the contest. They raced away to a 11-8 lead at the halfway stage in the first game and comfortably clinched the first game 21-16.

In the second game too the Indians couldn’t even manage to take lead anywhere in the contest. The Malaysians went on to win the contest just over 30 minutes to help Malaysia lead 1-0 in the tie.

Men’s Singles

Playing his first game in the tournament, Kidambi Srikanth started off the contest with a 6-3 lead. However the Malaysian soon clawed his way back in the contest. With four straight points he took 7-6 lead in the contest. The Malaysian went on to enter the interval with a three-point lead.

Soon after the break, Srikanth managed to reduce the deficit 12-13. However Lee Zii Jia took four points on the trot and went up 17-12. It was difficult for the Indian to reduce the difference and Lee Zii Jia went on to clinch the first game.

In the second game, Lee Zii Jia continued the momentum and was leading the game right from the start. He entered the interval with the score at 11-7. Errors from Srikanth’s end continued to pile up helping Jia’s lead to swell. He soon got to the matchpoint with a big lead of 20-9. Srikanth saved a couple of points. However, a wide shot from the Indian helped the Malaysian win the contest in straight games.

Women’s Singles

Sindhu suffered her first defeat against Goh Jin Wei after four successive wins in the past. Sindhu began the contest on a dominating fashion. She raced away to a 5-1 lead at the start and soon entered the interval with a six-point lead.

After the interval too Sindhu continued to cruise in the game and took a 18-8 lead. However Goh Jin Wei put on a fight and reduced the deficit to 14-19. Sindhu broke the streak of points from her opponent with a drop shot and eventually went on to win the first game.

In the second game, Goh Jin Wei began with a 5-1 lead. The change of ends worked in the favour of the Malaysian as she entered the interval with a 11-6 lead. She continued to dominate after the interval as she took seven successive points and took her lead to 18-6. Sindhu could only add four more points as she Wei took the game into the decider.

In the third game too Wei continued her dominance. She began with six straight points and cruised to the mid-game interval with the score at 11-2. From trailing 4-14, Sindhu found her groove and took four successive points to reduce the deficit. From 8-15, she yet again fought back and with flurry of attacking shots she managed to reduce the difference to just a solitary point.

Soon a neck-to-neck battle ensued between both the players. Goh Jin Wei however had the last laugh. At 21-20, she hit a cross-court smash and sealed the contest in her favour. This win also ensured Malaysia’s victory in the contest.

.Satwiksairaj Rankireddy adn Chirag Shetty lost their eight successive match against Malaysia’s World No.3 pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik. Meanwhile, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, who clinched a victory against Chinese Taipei went down in straight games to end the day for India.
