Djokovic has currently slipped to No.2 spot in the World rankings. 19-year old Carlos Alcaraz dethroned him from the top spot after winning the Indian Wells Masters. In a recent interview to CNN after becoming the World No.2, Djokovic said, “It’s a pity that I wasn’t able to play in Indian Wells, Miami. I love those tournaments. I had plenty of success there.”
“But at the same time, it is the conscious decision I made. I knew that there is always a possibility that I won’t go. It is the current state or current situation that I hope will change for later this year for the US Open. That is the most important tournament for me on the American soil,” he added.
Djokovic last played in the US Open in 2021. He finished as the runner-up that year after losing the final against Daniil Medvedev. “I really want to be playing there, want to be there, I’ve been fortunate to win that tournament three times, play many finals,” he said.

The Spaniard however has to win the upcoming Miami Open title to remain at the top spot. “I congratulate Alcaraz. He absolutely deserves to come back to No. 1,” he said.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion also added that he has no regrets after missing the Sunshine Double tournaments. “I have no regrets. I’ve learned through life that regrets only hold you back and basically make you live in the past. I don’t want to do that. I also don’t want to live too much in the future. I want to be as much as in the present moment, but of course think about future, create a better future.”
The 35-year old can next be seen in action at the Monte Carlo Masters that gets underway in April. After winning the Australian Open this year, he is now set to shift his focus to the clay court season ahead of the French Open.
