Daniil Medvedev vs Alexander Shevchenko

Daniil Medvedev added a second triumph to his 2023 Mutua Madrid Open campaign on Monday, but not before the second seed was given a real scare by qualifier Alexander Shevchenko at the clay-court ATP Masters 1000 event.

Medvedev twice rallied from a break down in the deciding set to claim a tense 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 win on Manolo Santana Stadium. He was forced to call on all his renowned defensive abilities to keep the 22-year-old Shevchenko at bay, but held firm in the Madrid heat to seal a two-hour, 43-minute triumph.

“He played well. He’s young, so I’m sure he’s going to up the rankings, especially if he plays like in this tournament,” said Medvedev of Shevchenko, who has risen five spots to No. 91 in the ATP Live Rankings as a result of his run to the third round on his Masters 1000 main-draw debut. “It’s always like this. He’s still young so he has a lot of time to go up.”

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Sebastian Baez

Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Sebastian Baez in a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victory. The Greek rattled off the final four games of the opening set and the last three of the third to advance to the last 16 at the ATP Masters 1000.

Tsitsipas will next face home favourite Bernabe Zapata Miralles, who continued his dream run at the Caja Magica with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory against qualifier Roman Safiullin.

Aryna Sabalenka vs Mirra Andreeva

No.2 seed Aryna Sabalenka ended 16-year-old wild card Mirra Andreeva’s run at the Mutua Madrid Open 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth round.

The result puts Sabalenka, the champion here in 2021, into the last eight for the second time in her career. She has reached at least the quarterfinal stage at all seven tournaments she has contested in 2023, and her overall record now stands at 26-4.

Andreeva, the youngest player ever to reach the last 16 of a WTA 1000 event, lost for the first time in a professional match this year. After winning consecutive ITF W60 events in April, the teenager upset Leylah Fernandez, Beatriz Haddad Maia and Magda Linette in Madrid to take her winning streak to 16 matches.

Maria Sakkari vs Paula Badosa

9th seed Maria Sakkari clinched a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Paula Badosa, ending hopes of a Mutua Madrid Open title for the country’s highest-ranked woman.

Sakkari will face Irina-Camelia Begu in a quarterfinal match Tuesday night in Madrid. Begu has lost two of three previous matches to Sakkari, most recently in the St. Petersburg three-set semifinals last year. This is Sakkari’s first quarterfinal appearance in Madrid, but the 10th of her career on clay.
