Andy Murray vs Andrea Vavassori

Andy Murray crashed out of the Madrid Open in the first round on Thursday, beaten 6-2, 7-6 (9/7) by qualifier Andrea Vavassori. The Italian world number 164 turfed out the three-time Grand Slam champion Briton in straight sets in the Spanish capital.

Vavassori broke world number 52 Murray twice to take a 4-0 lead in the first set before serving out, with his opponent unable to force a single break point. The 27-year-old broke again for 2-1 in the second set but fired into the net to allow his opponent back in to level at 4-4, with Murray celebrating furiously.

Dominic Thiem vs Kyle Edmund

Kyle Edmund was knocked out in the first round of the Madrid Open, losing 6-4 6-1 to Dominic Thiem. Edmund, 28, is recovering from three knee operations and has lost all six ATP Tour matches in 2023 as he continues his comeback. Thiem, 29, is also gradually coming back from a serious injury – a wrist problem that ruled him out for nine months – and is 93rd in the rankings. Thiem will face world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round.

Coco Gauff vs Irene Escorihuela

Gauff came back from an early break down in the first set to oust Spanish qualifier Irene Burillo Escorihuela 6-4, 6-1 on Manolo Santana Stadium. Gauff took 1 hour and 17 minutes to topple the World No.316 and reach the Madrid third round.

Gauff will face another Spaniard in the third round — No.26 seed Paula Badosa. Spanish No.1 Badosa defeated Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 on Thursday.

Caroline Garcia vs Yulia Putintseva

Garcia followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan. Putintseva had won all three of their previous matches, but Garcia finally got on the board in their head-to-head with a 1-hour and 35-minute win. Garcia’s aggressive play on both serve and return gave her a commanding 6-3, 4-0 lead and she was a point away from reaching 5-0 in the second set.

However, World No.51 Putintseva pulled herself back into the match, reeling off three games in a row and holding two break points to level the second set at 4-4. Garcia, though, regrouped to keep her break advantage at 5-3, and she served out the match at love two games later.
