Felix Auger Aliassime vs Fabio Fognini
Italian Fabio Fognini clinched the biggest upset win in the first round. He defeated10th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets to book spot in the second round. The 36-year-old Italian clinched a 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 after two hours and 17 minutes.
On Wednesday, he will meet Australian Jason Kubler; the World No. 69 rallied to overcome Argentine lucky loser Facundo Diaz Acosta in a close five-setter after three hours and 27 minutes.
Novak Djokovic vs Aleksandar Kovacevic
Novak Djokovic launched his quest for a record-breaking 23rd men’s Grand Slam singles title with a 6-3 6-2 7-6 (7-1) first-round victory over debutant Aleksandar Kovacevic.
The twice champion breezed through the first two sets before encountering resistance from the 24-year-old American whose lack of experience then showed in the tiebreak on the world’s biggest clay court.
Djokovic ended the contest with a sizzling service return on his first match point. He will next face Hungarian Marton Fucsovics for a place in the third round.
Carlos Alcaraz vs Flavio Cobolli
World number one Carlos Alcaraz began his quest for a second Grand Slam title by easing past Italian qualifier Flavio Cobolli 6-0, 6-2, 7-5. Alcaraz, who missed the Australian Open in January due to a leg injury, was impressive in his first Grand Slam match since his U.S. Open triumph last year and was ruthless as he raced through the opening set.
Alcaraz comfortably served out to go two sets up but the 159th-ranked Cobolli held his own and threatened to mount a late fightback as he broke to level the third set at 5-5 with some ripping forehands.
However, the top seed stepped up another gear to ensure Cobolli – who promised to get a tattoo of the Roland Garros logo after his qualifying run – would leave the tournament with an abiding image of a chastening defeat.
Women’s Singles
Caroline Garcia vs Wang Xiyu
France’s top player, Caroline Garcia, won her first-round match at Roland Garros on Monday, though she needed more than two-and-a-half hours on Court Philippe-Chatrier to do so.
The No. 5 seed outlasted China’s Wang Xiyu in 2 hours and 38 minutes, 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4 to win a round for the 10th time in 14 career main-draw appearances at her home major, and deny Wang her second career Top 5 win at a major.
