Casper Ruud vs Ben Shelton
Casper Ruud started his 2023 Barcelona Open campaign with a successful win over American Ben Shelton on Tuesday. The third-seeded Norwegian held off Shelton 6-2, 7-6(1) to book a quarter-final spot. Ruud defeated the 20-year-old left-handed Shelton in the second round in 70 minutes despite the American overturning a 3-5 lead in the second set to force a tie-break.
Despite Shelton’s second-set comeback, Ruud’s superior clay expertise ultimately became apparent as he won the contest. Ruud will then face either Francesco Passaro or Francisco Cerundolo, the 15th seed.
Frances Tiafoe vs Emil Ruusuvuori
Fifth seed Frances Tiafoe suffered a heartbreaking loss to Emil Ruusuvuori in the Round of 32 at the 2023 Barcelona Open. Tiafoe lost the first set 4-6 but mounted a come-back in a grueling second set, taking it 7-6(3) to push the match to a deciding third set. Ruusuvuori then served out the match that lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes and advanced to the Round of 16 with a 6-4, (3)6-7, 6-4 win.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz opened his title defense at the Barcelona Open with a comfortable 6-3, 6-1 win over Nuno Borges. The top-seeded Spaniard, No. 2 in the world, converted five of his seven break opportunities to secure the win at the Rafa Nadal center court on Tuesday.
A two-time winner this year, Alcaraz is making his 2023 debut on the European clay-court tour. He had not competed since Miami in March, skipping Monte Carlo because of inflammation in his left hand and back pain.
