Sudirman Cup Highlights: India had a disappointing start to their Sudirman Cup 2023 campaign on Sunday, 14th May 2023. The team led by PV Sindhu suffered 1-4 defeat against China in their first group encounter. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand gave India the only victory on the day. They defeated Chinese Taipei’s Lee Chia Hsin and Teng Chun Hsun 15-21, 21-18, 21-13. While, PV Sindhu suffered defeat against Tai Tzu Ying. HS Prannoy lost the Men’s Singles tie against Chou Tien Chen in straight games. Earlier India’s Sai Pratheek and Tanisha Crasto lost the Mixed Doubles tie 21-18, 24-26, 8-21 against Yang Po-Hsuan and Hu Ling Fang. Mixed Doubles
India’s Mixed Doubles duo Tanisha Crasto and Sai Pratheek lost against Chinese Taipei’s Yang Po-Hsuan and Hu Ling Fang in the opening tie of the contest between India and Chinese Taipei.
The contest began on an even note. The Indians managed to take lead after three points on the trot in the first game to take the scores to 8-5. They maintained the lead and entered the interval with a five-point cushion. After the break, the Indians continued to dominate. They took 20-11 lead and were cruising in the game.
The Taiwanese pair however gave them a scare as they managed to save six game points to reduce the deficit to 18-20. Sai Pratheek manage to close out the game with a drop shot to help the Indian pair win the first game.
In the second game, both the pairs gave a good fight and the Taiwanese duo managed to enter the interval with a slender 11-10 lead. Soon after the break, they managed to race ahead with three successive points to take the scores to 14-10.
They managed to stay ahead and took the scores to 20-16. The Indian pair fought back and took five points on the trot to get to the match point. Neck-to-neck battle soon ensued and the Taiwanese pair held their nerves as they win the second game 26-24. In the third game, the Taiwanese pair dominated completely as they clinched it 21-8 to seal victory in the contest.
Men’s Singles
HS Prannoy suffered a crashing 19-21, 15-21 defeat against Chou Tien Chen that gave Chinese Taipei a 2-0 lead in the contest. Prannoy was on the backfoot right from the start of the contest. He trailed 2-5 at the start. However he fought back and soon took a 8-7 lead. He attacked with successive smashes and entered the interval with a 11-8 lead.
He continued to lead 15-13. However Chen reduced the deficit with a smash and a subsequent net-error from Prannoy at a crucial juncture helped Chen level the scores 15-15. Soon he took a solitary point lead and neck-to-neck battle ensued. Chou Tien Chen took two points on the trot and went up 19-17. A subsequent net-error from Prannoy gave the game point to Chou Tien Chen. He then sealed the first game with a smash.
In the second game, Chou Tien Chen raced away with a 6-0 lead. He maintained the lead and entered the interval with a five-point cushion. Unforced errors continued to mount from Prannoy’s end as Chou Tien Chen’s lead swelled. He soon got to the match point with a nine-point lead. Prannoy saved four match points. However a wide shot from the Indian helped the Taiwanese win the contest in straight games.
Women’s Singles
Sindhu couldn’t overpower World No.3 Tai Tzu Ying as she suffered defeat against the Taiwanese for eighth successive time. Sindhu put in a valiant but Tai Tzu won 21-14, 18-21, 21-17 in an hour and four minutes.
In the first game, Tai Tzu Ying was dominating the contest. She entered the interval with a 11-5 lead. The Taiwanese continued her dominance as she went on to clinch the first game comfortably.
In the second game, Sindhu began the contest with a 4-0 lead. However Tai Tzu Ying fought back and managed to level the scores 5-5. Neck-to-neck battle ensued between both the players and Sindhu managed to take a slender 11-10 lead to enter the interval.
Sindhu took five straight points soon after the interval as she took 16-10 lead. From then on, she managed to maintain her lead and took the contest into the third game. In the decider, Tai Tzu Ying started off with a lead. Sindhu managed to level the scores 10-10 and Tai Tzu Ying entered the break with a 11-10 lead. Sindhu took a lead soon after the interval and neck-to-neck battle ensued.
However a net-error from Sindhu helped Tai level the scores 14-14. It proved to be crucial as Tai Tzu Ying capitalised on the mistake and ran away with five successive points. With a smash she won the contest to seal the contest for Chinese Taipei.
In the subsequent dead rubbers, World No.5 Satrwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered a 13-21, 21-17, 18-21 loss. Women’s doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand helped India avoid a whitewash. They defeated Lee Chia Hsin and Teng Chun Hsun with a come-from-behind 15-21, 21-18, 21-13 win to end the day for India.
