Singapore Open Highlights: Chirag-Satwik suffer first round exit, Treesa Jolly & Gayatri Gopichand bow out

World No.5 Indian Men's Doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will begin their Singapore Open campaign on Wednesday, 7th June 2023. Women's Doubles duo Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will also be in action on the day.

Singapore Open Highlights: Fifth seeded Indian Men’s Doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty bowed out from the first round at the Singapore Open 2023. The fifth seeded duo suffered a 18-21, 21-14, 18-21 loss against Japan’s Akira Koga and Taichi Saito in the first round. India’s Women’s Doubles duo Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also bowed out of the tournament after losing their first round contest.

Men’s Doubles

In a 68-minute battle, the Japanese pair trumped the Indian duo to advance to the second round in the tournament. The match started off with the Indian pair in the lead. At 15-12, the Japanese pair fought back with four straight points to take the lead. They went on to stay ahead and clinched the first game.

In the second game too the Indians led and ensured they did not let their opponents make a comeback as they won the game 21-14 and took the contest into the decider. In the decider both the players fought tooth and nail. The Japanese pair managed to enter the mid-game interval with a 11-9 lead. Despite a fight from the Indians, the Japanese duo went on to win the contest.

Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand vs Yeung Nga Ting/Yeung Pui Lam

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand started off the contest on the backfoot. The Indian duo entered the interval by trailing 4-11. The contest continued to remain one-sided as the Hong Kong pair won the first game 21-14.

In the second game too the Hong Kong duo started off with a 8-5 lead. The Indian pair however fought back with four points on the trot and took the lead. Neck-to-neck battle ensued and the Hong KJong pair managed to enter the interval with a slender 11-10 lead. After the break, the Indian pair went ahead and won the game 21-18 as the match headed into the decider.

In the third game, both the pairs put on a good fight. Jolly and Gopichand managed to eke out a 11-10 lead and entered the interval. They stayed ahead with the scores at 18-16. However a net-error from Gayatri Gopichand and a wide shot from Treesa Jolly helped the Hong Kong pair level the scores. They capitalised on the opportunity and went on to win the game 21-19.
