Canada Open Highlights: Sindhu, Lakshya Sen seal victories in first round

PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen will get their Canada Open campaign underway on Wednesday, 5th July 2023.

Canada Open Highlights: PV Sindhu began her campaign in Canada Open 2023 with a 21-16, 21-9 victory against Talia Ng in the first round on Wednesday, 5th July 2023. Lakshya Sen also entered the second round as he defeated Kunlavut Vitidsarn in straight games. Meanwhile, Gadde Shivani and Sai Praneeth bowed out from the tournament.

Sai Praneeth LOST TO Ygor Coelho 12-21, 17-21

Lakshya Sen BEAT Kunlavut Vitidsarn – 21-18, 21-15

Women’s Singles

PV Sindhu BEAT Talia Ng – 21-16, 21-9

Gadde Shivani LOST TO Supanida Kattethong – 12-21, 3-21

Lakshya Sen vs Kunlavut Vitidsarn

Lakshya Sen will be facing second seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the first round. The World No.19 Indian has so far given underwhelming performances in the tour this year. His best show is the semifinal appearance at Thailand Open last month, where he lost to Kunlavut Vitidsarn. He will yet again face a challenge against the Thai.

Vitidsarn meanwhile has won the India Open and Thailand Open tournaments this year. He enters the Canada Open after making it to the semifinal at the Singapore Open last month.

Vitidarn leads the head-to-head record against Lakshya Sen 5-3. He has won their last two meetings at German Open 2022 and Thailand Open 2023 and enters the upcoming contest as the favourite.

Sai Praneeth vs Ygor Coelho

Sai Praneeth made it to the main draw after playing the qualifiers. Praneeth is ranked 72nd in the world at the moment. He will be facing World No.58 Ygor Coelho of Brazil in the first round.

Sai Praneeth is making his return to the tour after the Thailand Open in May, where he bowed out from the first round. Coelho meanwhile last featured in a main draw ar rge Spain Masters. Praneeth leads the head-to-head record against the Brazilian 1-0.

PV Sindhu vs Talia Ng

PV Sindhu started off the contest cautiously. She was leading 4-2. However successive error from her helped her opponent level the scores. From then on there was much little to separate both the players. Sindhu was leading 10-8, but Talia Ng manages to pick up the next three points on the trot to go up 11-8.

Sindhu came back strong after the interval. She took three straight points and took back the lead. Ng however managed to level the score 13-13. But SIndhu did not let her opponent take the lead as with four straight points she went up 17-13. Sindhu them managed to stay ahead and closed out the first game 21-16.

In the second game, Sindhu started off with a 4-0 lead straightaway. Ng tried to make a comeback as she managed to reduce her deficit to 5-6. Sindhu however ran away with five successive points and entered the interval with a six-point lead.

Sindhu continued to extend her lead and closed out the second game 21-9.

Gaddhe Shivani will also be in action. The youngster will face the experienced Supanida Katethong in the opening round. Shivani is ranked 69th in the World, while Kathethong is the 17th ranked player.
