Badminton Asia Championships Highlights: HS Prannoy, PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth won their respective first round matches in the Badminton Asia Championships 2023 on Wednesday, 26th April 2023. Sindhu clinched a 21-15, 22-20 victory against Chinese Taipei’s Wen Chi Hsu. Srikanth and Prannoy also earned dominating victories in straight games. India’s Men’s Doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty and Women’s Doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also made it to the second round. Lakshya Sen vs Loh Kean Yew

BWF World Championships bronze medallist and Commonwealth Games Champion Lakshya Sen has crashed out of the Badminton Asia Championships 2023 in the first round. Lakshya lost to Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew in straight games in the men’s singles opening round on Wednesday.

Lakshya was out of sorts in the first game, and won just 7 points. The second game was much better for him but he eventually crumbled and lost 7-21, 21-23 to the Singaporean shuttler in 37 minutes.

Former World Championship silver medalist Kidambi Srikanth took 25 minutes to see off his first-round opponent Adnan Ebrahim 21-13 21-8. He will face world No 5 Kodai Naraoka in the men’s singles last-16.

PV Sindhu vs Wen Chi Hsu

Former world champion, Sindhu defeated wen Chi Hsu 21-15, 22-20 in a 46-minute affair in the women’s singles. The Indian started off the contest on the backfoot. She was trailing 11-14. However, she made a terrific comeback and with four successive points took the lead.

She continued her run and took a massive 19-14 lead. A wide shot from Chi helped Sindhu clinch the first game. In the second game, the Taipei shuttler gave some fight but Sindhu led 11-7 at the break before sealing the deal. Sindhu will face World No 9 Han Yue of China in the pre-quarters.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty vs Tan Kian Meng/Tan Wee Kiong

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are the sixth seed in the tournament. They will be facing Malaysia’s Tan Kian Meng and Tan Wee Kiong in the first round. The Indian duo enter the contest as the favourite. They won the Swiss Open title earlier this year. The Indian pair will face the Malaysian duo for the first time.

India’s PS Ravikrishna and Sankar Prasad Udayakumar,  MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila and Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala will also be in action in their respective first round matches.

Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnu Vardhan Goud lost their men’s double game against the Japanese pair of Kobayashi Yugo and Takuro Hoki. Krishna and Vishnu lost against former world champions in two straight games 15-21, 17-21.

Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand vs Lanny Mayasari/Ribika Sugiarto

Treesa and Gayatri duo defeated Indonesia’s Lanny Tria Mayasari and Ribka Sugiarto 17-21, 21-17, 21-18. The match lasted more than an hour. After losing the first game tamely, the Indian duo put up a dominant display in the second and began with a 5-0 lead. They maintained their lead throughout to force a decider.

The third game turned out to be an intense battle with Treesa and Gayatri trailing 15-16 against the Indonesian pair. They were then locked at 18-all when an aggressive Treesa came up with a powerful cross-court smash before the Indian duo sealed the issue in 64 minutes.

Mixed pair duo of Rohan Kapoor and Sikki Reddy also won their opening round match when they defeated Chan Peng Soon and Cheah Yee See of Malaysia 21-12, 21-16.
