Chasing 301, Australia got off to the worst possible start with Maheesh Theekshana trapping David Warner in front in just the second over of the chase. Captain Aaron Finch and Steve Smith resurrected the innings with a 67-run stand before the former fell short of his 50.

A rain delay meant that the target was revised to 282 in 44 overs, and Australia were staring at a spot of bother at 192/5, with their middle order having crumbled following Steve Smith and Marcus Stoinis’ dismissals. However, Maxwell kept them in hunt, building valuable partnership with the tail blasting his way through to 80 off just 51 balls to get his side over the line.

Earlier, Pathum Nissanka and Danushka Gunathilaka  got Sri Lanka off to a solid start after the hosts opted to bat first in the 1st ODI on Tuesday. Both got to their respective fifties in a 115-run stand which was broken by a freak run out.

Sri Lanka then lost wickets in a heap before Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka steadied the ship with a 81-run stand. Mendis, soon reached his fifty and was joined by Wanindu Hasaranga, and put on a death overs masterclass to take Sri Lanka to 300/7.

Australia chased down the total with eight balls to spare to go 1-0 up in the series. The SL vs AUS 2nd ODI will be played at the same venue on Thursday.
