Previously, InsideSport learned that Shreyas is yet to receive clearance from NCA physios. Iyer inclusion into the contingent in Delhi will depend on the fitness drills that are scheduled at National Cricket Academy on Tuesday.

A top BCCI official told InsideSport on condition of anonymity that Shreyas Iyer is very close to fitness.

He said: “He is very close to fitness. But he has not received fitness clearance from the NCA physios. So, he will need a fitness test.”

“As far as I know, the fitness drills are scheduled by Tuesday. If he clears, he will join the team in Delhi on Thursday,” he added.

Iyer, who amassed the most runs for India in Tests in 2022, has always been a guaranteed starter for Team India at No. 5. His back issue and Rishabh Pant’s accident, though, compelled the team management to reconsider their approach.

At the NCA right now, the middle-order batter is engaging in rehabilitative activities. However, he is now almost fit and ready to re-enter India playing XI.

Since Rishabh and Shreyas were out in Nagpur Test, Rohit Sharma gave Suryakumar Yadav his Test debut. Even though Shubman Gill was the best option, the team management preferred to have an offensive option in the middle of the order as Pant is also not available. SKY’s debut didn’t go as planned though as World No 1 T20 batter was cleaned up by Nathan Lyon on just 8 runs in 1st innings.

The 2nd Inninngs never came for Surya as India inflicted a massive Innings loss on Aussies.

But with Shreyas Iyer’s return, SKY can warm the bench again along with Shubman.
